Unlimited Medical Cover to All Ranks &;amp; Family Members Under New Army Medical Insurance Scheme - Commander

“All ranks in the Army and their next of kin will shortly have unlimited access to best medical facilities under a specially-designed Medical Insurance Scheme, through which all ranks and their next of kin, could obtain medical consultations, from the private sector as well after proper arrangements, made through military hospitals,” so pledged Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army during his visit to the East on Thursday (28).

The proposed Medical Insurance Scheme, announced as a surprise gesture by the Commander at 23 Division Headquarters this morning, during his address to the troops, comes as a New Year bonanza for all the troops, numbering about 200,000, currently engaged in island-wide development projects.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, currently in the East in order to meet the troops arrived at Poonani-based 23 Division Headquarters, to be received by Major General Lal Perera, Security Force Commander - East. A Guard of Honour saluted the visiting Army Chief at the premises before his address to the troops.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during his address to the troops wanted all of them to dedicate for the development of the country as disciplined troops since the country is fast entering a period of massive growth and development.

Next, the visiting Commander stopped at Army-run Sri Lanka’s largest Kandakadu farmland of 11,000 acres, in which Army troops are enthusiastically engaged in cultivating vegetables, fruits, paddy and animal husbandry for outside sale and own consumption.

Kandakadu farm, a success story, initiated by the Commander himself soon after the culmination of the humanitarian operations is managed by the Army’s newest addition, Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock under the Financial Management Branch, headed by Major General S.K. Weerasinghe whose directions assisted the effective management of the profit-making farm.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya offering his greetings to all those who have so far toiled to make the farm a huge success closely watched thriving crops and inspected the farm’s modern water sprinkling system, now fully functional, providing water to the entire extent of the farmland.

The Commander expressed his pleasure over the purchase of the entire state-of-the-art water sprinkling system, valued at Rs 3 million, purely from the net profits of the sale of farm products.

In the company of Major General Weerasinghe and the Director of Agriculture and Livestock, Lieutenant General Jayasuriya afterwards took time off to have a closer look at the dairy farm where cattle are reared for milk and other dairy products, in keeping with latest international standards. The visiting Army Chief, impressed with the marked improvement of the farmland as a whole within such a short span of time, expressed the hope that it would turn out to be the best farm in the whole of the country very soon.

Later on, the Commander called at the 22 Division Headquarters in Trincomalee to be greeted with a drive-past Guard Turnout. He interacted with the troops there after a brief address to them while extending New Year greetings.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya during his visit to the East was then invited to visit the 232 Brigade Headquarters at Thoppigala and address the troops.

During his stay, the Commander made it a point to inspect the construction site of the Thoppigala War Hero Monument, now fast receiving finishing touches. After exchange of a couple of thoughts with engineers and others working there, the visiting Commander offered some instructive directions to them.

Thoppigala (Baron’s Cap) which remained a household name for some time in Sri Lanka before the culmination of the war due to concentrations of marauding LTTE terrorists inside those dense jungles and subsequent offensives of the troops, is to shortly provide eternal memories with the construction of this memorial.

Thoppigala War Memorial is a fitting tribute to the immortal memory of hundreds of War Heroes who laid their precious lives while fighting against terrorist strongholds in Thoppigala jungles as East-based humanitarian operations, reached a decisive phase in the aftermath of the Mavil Aru episode.

As the final segment of the day’s agenda, the Commander afterwards went to see the Task Force-3 troops, stationed in Akkraipattu. He was received by the Commander, Task Force - 3 upon arrival at Malwatta Task Force - 3 Headquarters before the Commander interacted with troops while extending greetings.
