“Unilateral Geneva Allegations Baffle All of Us Who Waged the Humanitarian Ops” - Commander

“The vigorous unilateral allegations against the Army, now made in Geneva, baffle all of us who decisively waged the humanitarian operations in Wanni at that stage when I was the Wanni Commander because neither myself, nor any Security Force Commander or for that matter, any Division or Brigade Commander, to say the least, in the province, received a single complaint against the Army from any of those quarters, now screaming elsewhere. How come? Why no such complaints of this nature were made at that period against the Army or any specific ground commander, is really food for thought and incredibly confusing,” so queried the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, now in Wanni area with the objective of meeting all ranks on the eve of the forthcoming traditional New Year ceremony and receiving updates on diverse nation-building tasks, being effectively pursued by Wanni troops.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Thursday (14) afternoon arrived at the Security Force Headquarters - Wanni (SFHQ-W) to drive past a Guard Turnout and receive a Guard of Honour salute after he was welcomed by Major General Boniface Perera, Security Force Commander - Wanni who afterwards briefed the visiting Army Chief on multifaceted roles of Wanni-based troops.

Talking to a large ensemble of all ranks at the SFHQ-W auditorium, the visiting Commander of the Army highlighted the importance of being alert to malicious propaganda network against the Army and maintaining the highest degree of discipline while the Army is engaged in the challenging nation-building roles and reconciliatory moves.

“It has been the practice of various interested parties since the culmination of the war to make barrage of criticism against our troops, based on a rash of unfounded allegations, malice and ulterior motives. All these manifestations appear every year around the same time when UN Human Rights Council gathers for their sessions in Geneva. It will be the practice, next year, too because the LTTE rump does not want to see a promising and prosperous Sri Lanka and they want to thrive on those allegations until they re-emerge. On the other hand, their very same survival in western destinations is becoming more and more uncertain since those countries are now deporting bogus asylum seekers and economic refugees. So, the only alternative remains for them, is to tarnish the image of the Army and the country to serve their own ends. As I see, many of those critics never want to heap praise on the Sri Lanka Army for its decisive eradication of the world’s most feared terrorist outfit, the LTTE at the expense of many heroic lives. Why is it so? Was it because they still could not contain or uproot their own terror cycles in their home fronts or just because of their mere hypocrisy?,” the Commander remarked.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya during the second leg of the day’s itinerary on Thursday (14) went to meet the troops serving the 62 Division Headquarters at Welioya and took time off to speak to them, reminding them of the noble commitment and their sacred duty of serving the country tirelessly. General Officer Commanding, 62 Division warmly received the visiting Army Chief at the entrance to the Headquarters. Troops presented a Guard Turnout and greeted the visiting Commander of the Army.
