Defamation cases filed by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya against Jaffna-based ‘Valampuri’ and ‘Uthayan’ newspapers were taken up for hearing before Jaffna District Judge on Monday (21). The Editor of the ‘Valampuri’ newspaper was present in the Court, and it was informed that summons could not be served on the ‘Uthayan’ newspaper.
The Court re-issued summons to ‘Uthayan’ newspaper, returnable on 15th March 2013. The case will be taken up for hearing on that day.
‘Valampuri’ and ‘Uthayan’ newspapers with malicious intentions have been in the practice of publishing incorrect, insulting and wrong information concerning the Army, despite repeated such instances that were brought to their notice on several occasions.
