More than 2500 soldiers of the Army across the island on the directions of the Commander of the Army, are round the clock working in order to provide relief to thousands of flood victims and restore normalcy in affected areas.
Hundreds of troops in Matale, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Moneragala, Puttalam, Kegale, Batticaloa and Kurunegala districts in coordination with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and state agencies have thrown their full-weight behind rescue and relief operations and helped thousands of stranded people.
In Matale district, troops serving 58 Division and 583 Brigade Headquarters rescued three people, being carried away in surging waters and rushed to landslide affected Nikolayawatta, Matale area. They removed boulders and trees that have fallen on roads and roofs causing extensive damages.
Around 150-200 civilians, found confined to a tiny mountain range atop a hill after they had abandoned their houses due to increasing water levels in Nikolayawatta area were rescued by Army troops after trekking miles to reach them with the use of Army boats.
Army troops coordinated relief to the displaced and helped relocate them in temporary school buildings.
