Detailed arrangements, related to Sri Lanka's Army Chief's formal visit to the Maldives, at the invitation of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), saw Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, invited to pay a formal visit to the MNDF Northern Headquarters , situated in the atoll, Madivaru on Thursday (18).
Warmly received jointly by Colonel Mohamed Ziyad, acting Commander, MNDF Northern Area Headquarters and Captain Ahmed Rameez, Deputy Commander, MNDF Northern Area on arrival at the premises, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, in conformity with military formalities, was ushered to receive the salute in the Guard of Honour, presented by troops in the MNDF Northern Headquarters.
Cordial exchange of views between Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Colonel Mohamed Ziyad, acting Commander, MNDF Northern Area that began afterwards, focused largely on prevailing security arrangements in the northern sector of the Maldives and Sri Lanka's post-war development-oriented roles, being executed by the Army, in line with the government's vision to make Sri Lanka, the 'Wonder of Asia'.
An elaborate multi-media presentation that sums up Northern Headquarters' multifarious responsibilities and assignments, screened in the presence of the visiting Commander of the Army around the same time, brought the visit to the Northern Headquarters to a comprehensive end. Colonel Ziyad, attaching symbolic memory to the brief meeting, presented a special memento to the Sri Lankan Army Chief and thanked for his gracious presence there. The gesture was reciprocated. Before his departure, the visiting Army Chief, ensured grateful greetings are documented in the Visitors' Book in the office.
A few minutes later, the visiting Commander at the invitation of Northern Headquarters, called over at the newly opened MNDF Composite Maritime Training Centre at Maafilaafushi Post where troops are trained to enhance the overall capabilities and operational effectiveness of the MNDF Coast Guard and the Marine Corps. At the entrance, he was received by Commandant, Composite Maritime Training Centre and other respective senior officers.
As the final leg of the day's agenda, the Commander, together with his retinue, took time off to visit one of the leading fish canning factories in Felivaru atoll. Deputy General Manager of the factory welcomed the Commander and accompanying Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya and took them around the factory, enabling them to see for themselves how the canning process is done smoothly.
