Nuns Offered Alms in Special Vesak Ceremony at SVAB Hqrs

In order to transfer merits on all fallen and missing War Heroes and invoke blessings on the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and all those serving the Army, the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) at Army Headquarters, offered alms to a group of 15 Buddhist nuns during a special ceremony at the SVAB auditorium Wednesday (2) noon.

Leadership to the arrangements of the ceremony, organized in connection with the forthcoming Vesak festival, came from Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB who also mustered the support of other Regimental chairpersons for conduct of this special Pinkama (meritorious act), a novel experience to the SVAB members.

Ven. Dharmapala Therani, the senior nun, attached to Madiwela nuns’ monastery performed religious observances and invoked blessings before the alms-giving got underway.

The attending nuns on arrival at the main entrance to the Army Headquarters were welcomed in accordance with ancient religious rituals and conducted in a colourful Perahera (procession) to the venue. Buddhist flag-bearers, traditional dancing groups and drummers decorated the event as the procession paraded.

Alms, prepared by respective Regimental Seva Vanitha units were offered to the clergy by Seva Vanitha chairpersons who were present for the occasion. Offer of Pirikara, organized by the SVAB and other Seva Vanitha units to the nuns culminated the day’s event.

A gathering of SVAB members, senior officers and other ranks participated in the meritorious event.
