Interacting with hundreds of Tamil civilians, resident in the 55 Division area in the Jaffna peninsula, 551, 552 and 553 Brigade Headquarters organized separate Sinhala-Hindu New Year festivals, giving prominence to conduct of traditional New Year games, sports and other entertaining features.
Prior to those festivities, Brigadier J.R Kulathunga, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division visited kids at Palai pre-school and distributed a large stock of school accessories and writing materials among them, together with parcels of sweet-meats, generally used in connection with the New Year celebrations.
On April 11, on the instructions of Brigadier Kulathunga, the ‘Bak Maha Ulela’ (New Year Festival), organized by 551 Brigade at Championpattu Government’s Tamil Mixed School grounds, took place with the participation of a large number of civilians and youngsters.
The festival provided the attendees with the opportunity of taking part in traditional and entertaining sports events and games such as balancing acts, tug of war, grease pole climb, hurdle races, marathon run, bun-eating, cadjan-weaving, bicycle races, etc.
The festival, attended by 551 Brigade Commander as the Chief Guest saw prizes were distributed to the winners at the end of the event.
Meanwhile, Aiyakachchi public grounds in the 552 Brigade area adorned festive garbs on April 7, when civilians joined hands with soldiers to stage a New Year festival, replete with New Year games and other amusing features.
Many children and civilians enthusiastically took part in various events such as balancing acts, tug of war, grease pole climb, hurdle races, marathon run, bun-eating, cadjan-weaving, bicycle races, etc. Brigadier J.R Kulathunga, General Officer Commanding, 55 Division attending the occasion as the Chief Guest joined together to give away prizes for the winners in different events.
In the same manner, Mr K Baskaran, Principal, Aliyaweli school and Mr P Selva Kumar, Principal, Parameshwari school in the 553 Brigade area attended one more New Year festival, organized at Uduththurai Centamil grounds as Chief Guests. The arrangement organized by troops of the 553 Brigade distributed a large stock of gift parcels to the winners in those events.
