Army Organizes Bank Loans for Reintegrated Ex-LTTE Combatants

With the intention of helping LTTE ex-combatants to start self employment, army in Jaffna has organized Bank loans worth Rs.250,000/= each for 25 reintegrated ex-LTTE combatants in liaison with Bank of Ceylon (BoC).

After a discussion with the Deputy General Manager (DGM) of BoC Mr. K.E.D. Sumanasiri, Civil Affairs Office of the Uduvil based 513 Brigade arranged the loan scheme for ex-combatants to start self employment projects. At the first phase, each one was offered Rs. 50,000/=. Commander Security Forces Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe and distinguished guests handed over the cheques to the 25 ex-combatants during a function held at Makiapiddy Wednesday (11) morning. The balance Rs. 200,000/= will be given in the future.

Maj. Gen. Hathurusinghe requested the reintegrated youths to forget their past and step into a new world with positive attitudes to engage in economic development activities.

“Various groups in Tamil Diaspora are now in the process of undermining the hard-earned peace in the country. Instead of disturbing peace now being enjoyed by the people of Sri Lanka, those groups must come forward to help destitute people to make their life better using money being wasted on creating dissension among communities in Sri Lanka,” SF-J Commander  added.

On the same occasion, a new house built by the troops of 513 Brigade was donated to Mrs. Sellathurai Vimalawathi, a widow with two children from Makiapiddy, Santhilippay. Since the death of her husband about three years ago, Vimalawathi had been living in a temporary shed. Troops of the 14th Battalion the Gemunu Watch (14 GW) constructed the house worth approximately Rs. 300,000/= for her, with lavish support of donors. Commander SF-J handed over the key and domestic utensils to the recipient.

Meanwhile, 84 kids of four pre-schools in Alaveddy area were given sets of uniforms, shoes and exercise books as New Year gifts to use in the next term to begin after the Sinhala Hindu New Year festival.
