The historic Madu Shrine (Our Lady of Madu) in Mannar is to have a new Pilgrims’ Rest soon, thanks to the labour, provided by Army troops, serving the 61 Division and 613 Brigade under the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni.
Construction of the 40 x 100 feet long new Pilgrims’ Rest has been sponsored by People’s Bank after Mannar Bishop Rev. Rayappu Joseph made a request to this effect to the troops serving the area.
Major General A.K.S Perera, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (SFHQ-W) on Monday (2) laid the cornerstone for its construction in a simple ceremony, together with Rev Bishop Rayappu, Pastor Rev Imiliyano of Madu Church, Mr Ranjith Kodithuwakku, People’s Bank Regional Resident Manager for Wanni, Brigadier A. Kariyakarawana, General Officer Commanding, 61 Division, Colonel M.M. Kithsiri, 613 Brigade Commander and a few others.
Soon after the brief ceremony, Major General Perera remained on the worksite for some time and discussed ways and means of constructing it with Army engineers who had already arrived at the venue.
Army troops expect to complete the construction within a matter of few weeks and hand it over to the authorities at Madu Church.
