Sri Lankan Trainee Students Greet Visiting Commander at HQSSG in Pakistan

The Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, currently visiting Pakistan on a six-day tour, at the invitation of his Pakistan counterpart, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, arrived at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Peshwar on Tuesday (3) to be received warmly by its Commandant Major General Mazhar Jamil and Senior Officers.

During his stay at the PMA as the first stop in the day’s itinerary, the Commander received an overall picture of the PMA’s curricular as well as its courses, being conducted on behalf of trainee foreign students. Adding more significance to the visit, the Commander was also able to share a couple of views with the trainees there before he called on the Commander, 11 Corps Lieutenant General Khalib Rabbani at the same location, a few minutes later.

His next stopover was at Khawaza Khela 19 Division Headquarters where the Commander, together with his entourage was warmly received by General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major General Qamar. A briefing presented by a senior officer explained in detail how security operations in their areas of responsibility are carried out.

The Commander’s visit to the Headquarters Special Service Group (HQSSG) at Tarbela afterwards was of two-fold importance because this Headquarters provides training to foreign students, including those from Sri Lanka. Upon his arrival there, he met with the General Officer Commanding at HQSSG Major General Farrukh and Sri Lankan officer trainees Lieutenant W.P.S.S Weerasinghe who greeted their Commander and profusely thanked him for his interaction with them while receiving training in an overseas institute.

After the Commander’s formal meeting with the HQSSG General Officer Commanding, a mock demonstration on ‘anti-terrorist operations’ was staged at the premises, enabling the visiting Commander to witness how such operations are carried out in Pakistan, taking a number of salient features into consideration. Before the Commander’s exit from the venue, the GOC presented a memento to the visiting Army Chief as a gesture of goodwill and memory.

The visiting Commander thereafter visited Pakistan Army’s Rehabilitation Centre where he was warmly received by the Commandant of the Rehabilitation Centre Lieutenant General Azhar. There Lieutenant General  Jayasuriya who considers the rehabilitation of wounded War Heroes as a noble endeavour, took a keen interest in the methodology used by the Pakistan Army to rehabilitate its disabled soldiers and shared a few of his own experiences with the Commandant of the Rehabilitation Centre. As the final item on the day’s agenda, the Commander was scheduled to meet the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka later on the day.
