Leader, Jaffna District Tamil-Speaking People Mr Angajan Ramanathan, in a memorandum, submitted to the Jaffna UN office on Monday (27) and concurrently copied to High Commissioner of Canada, High Commissioner of UK, High Commissioner of India, US Ambassador, Norway’s Ambassador, French Ambassador, UN Colombo office, President’s Secretary, Northern Province Governor and District Secretary for Jaffna, called upon the UN and international community to keep off from Sri Lanka since it would not be in the best interest of the people of Jaffna and Sri Lanka at large.
The memorandum, captioned, ‘Resolution by the people of Jaffna’ was delivered amidst a gathering of over 3000 protestors in Jaffna who took to streets on Monday (27) against alleged UN moves to bring a resolution targeting Sri Lanka.
The Jaffna memorandum, fully endorsing the government’s multi-faceted development programmes, meant to restore Jaffna’s past glory, queries as to why the international community was not that enthusiastic when the people of Jaffna suffered for more than 30 years under gunpoint.
‘These western attempts to bring forth a resolution against Sri Lanka under the guise of accountability issues, is not what the people of Jaffna is needed and we, as the people of Jaffna do not believe in imported solutions, forced upon by interested parties.’
‘We firmly believe that we are able to solve our problems through a home grown solution and it will further strengthen our brotherhood with Sinhalese people. After three decades, people in Jaffna can feel the true freedom; we are indebted to the President Rajapaksa for bringing an end to the conflict and resorting peace and normalcy in the North. It is we who lived and suffered with the conflict for thirty years who understand the true meaning of peace, it is we who suffered for thirty years under gunpoint, it is we who value this freedom more than anyone else in the world who claim to care about us. What we need now is to move forward from the past and achieve our true potential by developing North and gaining our true potential,’ the memorandum urged.
More than 150 island-wide protests were held on Monday (27) against an anti-Sri Lankan resolution, to be moved by the US at UNHRC sessions and Jaffna’s protest from the Temple Road proceeded to the Jaffna UN office. Later on, the crowd gathered at the Jaffna main bus stand and marched to the Jaffna Post Office.
Security Forces provided security to the peaceful agitation.
