With the support received from ‘Caritas HUDEC’, the non-governmental organization, fishermen in Ponnaweli under 663 Brigade area in 66 Division received 50 fishing boats and 20 Wallam (canoes) on concessionary basis, following initiatives taken by the Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi (SFHQ-KLN).
Each boat, valued at Rs 460,000/= was given away to fishermen at half price, Rs 230,000/= under installment payment basis. The NGO pays the other half from its funds. The same basis was applied to distribution of 20 other canoes at the same occasion. Each canoe was valued at Rs 85,000/= and half of the value was borne by the NGO.
During the same distribution ceremony, the NGO which conducted house wiring and carpentry vocational courses for the benefit of unemployed young men, distributed a stock of electric and carpentry accessories that can be used for their vocations.
The simple ceremony was attended by 66 Division General Officer Commanding, 663 Brigade Commander, 66 Division Civil Affairs Coordinator and a group of representatives from the NGO, ‘Caritas HUDEC’.
