Secretary Defence Gifts New Storied Building to School, Constructed with Army Labour

Jaffna’s reputed Tellippalai Mahajana College that boasts of a history of more than a century wore ceremonial garbs on Friday (24) when the college opened its three-storied new building, erected under the aegis of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development and with labour support offered by Army Engineers and Jaffna troops.

The new school building, the brainchild of Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa was brought to total completion at a cost of Rs 21.9 million as against the estimated figure of Rs 24 million, thereby saving Rs 2.1 million since 5 Engineer Service Regiment (ESR) troops as well as Jaffna Security Forces Headquarters troops jointly laboured hard to put it up as one more community-oriented Army project close to their hearts, being gifted to the students in Jaffna.

Deshamanya Mr Ken Balendra, Chairman, Brandix Ltd, in response to a request made by Ministry of Defence came forward to offer his company’s financial patronage for the construction of the new building, named ‘Ampalavanar Kandiah Memorial Block’ with a pavilion and special facilities for aesthetic studies and administrative offices.      

Established in 1910 by late Mr Duraiappa Pillai himself in his own plot of land, later on to become its first principal, the Tellippalai Mahajana College to her credit, has produced to this date a string of scholars, intellectuals, medical specialists, politicians, scientists and the suchlike, including vice chancellors of universities.

Opening of the new three-storied building by the Chief Guest Mr Rajapaksa on Friday (24) in the company of Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Jaffna Commander, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, further facilitates uninterrupted conduct of curricular in the school, currently with more than 1500 students and 68 members of the tutorial staff. The college unlike other schools, has all four major streams of study; Maths, Bio-Science, Commerce and Arts.    

Meanwhile, tradition-rich Jaffna’s culture, its natural beauty, places of historic religious and social importance, architectural wonders and almost everything, copied on lens by professional lens-men, showed up Friday (24) morning at the reputed Jaffna Public Library for public display.

The mega photo exhibition, named ‘Yarl Photo Exhibition’ with more than 450 photos that depicts wide and rich greater diversity of life in the peninsula, was opened by Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence and Urban Development who is currently on a visit to Jaffna.

The ‘Yarl Photo Exhibition’ at Jaffna Public Library remains open to the public for three days commencing today (Feb 24-26) and expects to attract a wide audience of social, cultural, religious, environmental, aesthetic and intellectual interests.

Mr Rajapaksa after its opening viewed the exhibits, accompanied by Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, District Secretary for Jaffna, clergy and several other leading citizens in the area.

Towards the latter part of the day, the Secretary Defence was scheduled to visit the crab fattening farm in Kayts.
