Eight sport clubs in Mulliyaweli, Mullaittivu in the 592 Brigade area for the first time after culmination of the war for peace, recently took part in a two-day cricket tournament with the support of Army cricketers.
Vinayagar Sports Club (Mulliyaweli South), Mancholai Sports Club (Kumarapuram), Mangaleshwaran Sports Club (Wattappalai), Vidiya Sports Club (Tanniuttu), Ali Jinna Sports Club (Nirapiddi), Vinnoli Sports Club (Mamulai), Walarmadi Sports Club (Mulliyaweli West) and Diamond Sports Club (Mamulai) which participated in the tournament received the much-needed patronage of Mulliyaweli Traders’ Association for purchase of incentives.
Each participating team, best bowler, best batsman, man of the tournament and most-talented sportsman in the tournament, received stocks of sportswear as special gifts, following patronage, offered by Mulliyaweli Traders’ Association, Mulliyaweli.
The final encounter was contested by Vidiya Sports Club and Ali Jinna Sports Club, amidst a large gathering of cricket fans and sportsmen and women. After a tight encounter, Vidiya Sports Club emerged victorious at the end.
Brigadier G.R.H Dias, 59 Division General Officer Commanding and Mr T. Thevarasa, Chairman, Mulliyaweli Traders’ Association, attended the prize awarding ceremony as Chief Guests on the final day of the tournament.
Mr Thevarasa in his brief address to the occasion said that sport arrangements of this nature enormously help to build bridges of harmony and reconciliation among different ethnicities, for which the Army should be given the credit and praise.
