The maiden harvest of vegetables in the 6-acre farming land, belonging to the newly-opened Officers’ Career Development Centre (OCDC) at Buttala, designed exclusively for warfare and defence management studies, was symbolically handed over to the OCDC Commandant Brigadier K.P.A Jayasekara during a recent brief arrangement.
Officer Commanding of the farm where vegetables like cabbage, leeks, tomatoes, beetroot, brinjals, snake-gourd, long beans, carrot, lufta, capsicum, etc marked the occasion after offering a representative stock to the OCDC before products were released to the market for public sale. Cultivations started a few weeks before the official inauguration of the OCDC late in January this year by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.
Brigadier Jayasekara after receipt of the symbolic harvest expressed his happiness on the hard work of the OCDC staff and assured them further support for expansion of the project to include more varieties of vegetables.
In the year 2011, the Army was requested to take charge of a section of permanent structures, belonging to the UGC at Buttala 'Deyata Kirula' National Exhibition premises by the government in the aftermath of the event, subsequent to a directive of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa who confided in the Army’s ability of converting it to be a productive institute.
The OCDC concept, mooted by the incumbent Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya was realized, consequent upon the ever-increasing interest and the need for a forum of this relevance at both local and international levels.
