US Global Peace Operations Initiative Team Here To Assess Training for Future UN Assignments

A team of the US Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) Resource Analysis, currently in Sri Lanka to obtain a factual assessment, regarding peace-keeping training capabilities and modules at the Army Institute of Peace Support Operations Training in Sri Lanka (IPSOTSL), called on the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on Tuesday (31) at Army Headquarters.

The delegation led by Mr Scott A. Weidie, Chief of Multi-national Training, US Pacific Command (USPACOM), included Mr Rich Maloney, GPOI Planner, USPACOM, Mr John L. Otte, Director of Camber Corporation’s International Civil Military Division, Lieutenant Colonel  Lucien Campillo, Desk Officer, USPACOM. Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Schuler, Defence Attaché at US Embassy and Wing Commander Chanaka Fernando (Rtd), Training Programme Manager, US Embassy.

The delegation expects to assess capabilities and preparedness of equipment and troops of the Army on ground in case of any global emergencies and any other operations. They are also expected to review past assignments that had been undertaken by the Sri Lankan troops and fulfilment of responsibilities assigned to them.

Mr Scott A. Weidie who serves as the Chief of Multi-national Training with oversight of the GPOI, during his brief meeting with the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya Tuesday (31) morning, commended the contribution, being made by Sri Lankan troops to the UN Peace-keeping  missions overseas.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya during the exchange of views with the visiting delegation expressed the Army’s open willingness towards contributing more troops for global peace-keeping at the invitation of the UN.

He also told the delegation that the Army is prepared to deploy up to 3 battalions for this purpose, including woman soldiers, engineers, medical troops and so on. ‘Sri Lanka’s commitment to the global peace is always there and we are ready to deploy more troops at short notice,’ the Commander pledged.

Soon after the meeting with the Army Chief was over, the delegation had one more round of extensive discussions with several senior officers, including the Army Director General General Staff, Director Operations, Director Training and the Commandant IPSOTSL where the gamut of relevant training modules vis-a-vis humanitarian assistance missions, etc was taken up.

A presentation submitted by the Army during the meeting with senior Army officers after the Commander’s interaction, elaborated on the contribution that has been so far made by the Sri Lankan troops for UN assignments.

The delegation during their stay in Sri Lanka is scheduled to visit the IPSOTSL at Kukuleganga on Wednesday (1) and expected to interact with IPSOTSL officers and others under training.

Mr Scott Weidie joined the US Navy after graduating from Millsaps College (1985). He is a graduate of the US Naval Postgraduate School (1993), Naval War College (1997), and Joint Forces Staff College (2000) and has served in aviation squadrons, aboard ship, and numerous staff assignments. He served as the Deputy Director of the Coordination Centre for disaster relief operations for the December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. He has planned disaster relief operations in the Philippines (February 2006) and served as Joint Task Force Liaison Officer to the United Nations for relief operations in Myanmar (May 2008). He serves on the staff of US Pacific Command as the Chief of Multinational Training with oversight of the Multinational Planning Augmentation Team (MPAT) Programme and Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).

Sri Lanka Army in 2004 opened its first training institute for UN peace-keeping troops in Kukuleganga with the intention of improving interoperability of the troops and enhancing their ability to perform peace-keeping and humanitarian assistance missions.
