Visiting Army Delegation in Bangladesh Meets Lady Premier; First Incumbent Commander to Meet the Head of a State

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, currently visiting Bangladesh as a distinguished invitee of his Bangladesh counterpart, General Mohammed Abdul Mubeen, reached a climax on Sunday (15) when he had the rare distinction of paying a courtesy visit to the Hon Prime Minister of People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mrs Sheikh Hasina Wazed, the eldest daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, together with Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Mr W.A Sarath K Waragoda during the meeting with the Bangladesh leader, exchanged pleasantries and a couple of views and recalled age-old sound relations between the two armies and the countries.

The visiting Army Chief attaching the highest importance and consideration to the occasion towards the end of the formal visit presented the Bangladesh Prime Minister with a special memento as a symbol of goodwill and excellent bilateral relations.

Before the visiting Commander’s courtesy call on the Prime Minister, he visited the Navy Headquarters at Bangladesh Armed Forces Headquarters at Senakunja in the Dhaka Cantonment and had a courtesy meeting with the Bangladesh’s Chief of Navy Staff, Vice Admiral M. Zahir at his office where he shared a few thoughts on ever-increasing maritime issues. Soon after this meeting, the Commander and his delegation went to see the Armed Forces’ Medical College where they were briefed on how knowledge of medicine is imparted to tri-service officers during their career courses.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya’s meeting with the Bangladesh Premier in his capacity as Sri Lanka’s Commander of the Army leaves an indelible mark in Sri Lanka Army’s chronicles as the first Commander who has had the privilege of directly meeting the Prime Minister (Head of State) of a country while in office.

The lady Prime Minister of Bangladesh is the widow of a reputed nuclear scientist, M. A. Wazed Miah. Mrs Sheikh Hasina before she was voted to power has once before held the PM’s office from 1996 to 2001.
