23 Division Marks Its 22nd Anniversary at its Punani Hqrs


Punani-based 23 Division Headquarters that boasts of an unparalleled contribution to the liberation of the East from the clutches of LTTE terrorism before May 2009 marked its 22nd anniversary recently with a series of commemorative and meritorious events.

Covering districts such as Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa and Ampara under the 23 Division, commanded by Brigadier Mahinda Mudalige, General Officer Commanding, 231, 232 and 233 Brigades based in Dehiattakandiya, Thoppigala and Vakare provide security to those districts.

An all night Pirith Chanting ceremony at 23 Division (infantry), together with an alms-giving to 22 monks, the following day kicked off the arrangements where transfer of merits to all fallen War Heroes and invoking of blessings on disable and injured War Heroes, family members, officers and other ranks took place.

To signify the importance of the Division Day (January 1), troops in accordance with military traditions accorded a salute plus a Guard Turnout to the General Officer Commanding before he was invited to plant a mango sapling in the 23 Division premises. Soon after an all rank lunch organized at the headquarters, Brigadier Mudalige addressed the troops and requested them to commit to diverse development projects, being carried out by the Army for prosperity of the country.
    
As the final segment of anniversary programmes, a musical entertainment with the participation of all ranks and members of the civil staff took place at the venue. The Army’s western band warmed the evening with new hits and melodies adding different beats to the audience.
    
More than 2000 troops serving the 23 Division, Brigade Commanders, Unit Commanders and a gathering of invitees attended those anniversary events.
