Defender of the Nation

Military Police 'Vinaya Araksha' Soldiers Warm 'Nelum Pokuna' with Enthralling Performances

Sri Lanka Army, a household name that remains indelibly etched on the memory of every patriot, resident here or elsewhere, is in fact comprised of a dazzling array of talent and an unequalled string of successes, be they in warfare, national disasters and emergencies, rescue operations, constructions, sports, humanitarian assistance, foreign missions, development or anything else that is generally, entrusted to them.

Both officers and other ranks in the Army in the past 30 years due to their untiring commitments to the national cause, have hardly had any respite for display of their multi talents, sports skills or any entertaining features, though they like any other are endowed with such virtuosity.

The incumbent Commander of the Army, having screened those underlying aspects, inherent among soldiers, instructed accordingly to revamp and revive all those flagging military traditions, formalities, ceremonials, etc creating space for them again to resume such practices since permanent peace has dawned.

This approach resulted in many a change in peripheral roles in all Regiments and their associated events, like the ‘Vinaya Araksha’, talent show of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police (SLCMP) which creating history, went on the boards on Wednesday (28) at ‘Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa’ Theatre before a galaxy of distinguished invitees, including the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Chief Guest and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch.

Both Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya were warmly welcomed by Major General E.K.J.K Wijayasiri, Colonel Commandant of SLCMP Regiment on arrival at the Nelum Pokuna main entrance.

Wednesday’s SLCMP’s ‘Talent of Provost’, made a name for itself in the newly opened theatre because it was the SLCMP Regiment which staged the first-ever Army ceremony inside this colossal but sophisticated and unique architectural wonder, gifted to Sri Lanka by Chinese people.

The SLCMP in its lifespan of 62 years as the law enforcement wing in the Army has performed a commendable role by maintenance of highest standards of discipline among all ranks in the Army while enthusiastically assisting other related peripheral roles with equal commitment.

Wednesday’s glittering event, replete with scintillating and eye-catching spectacles that mirrored artistic talents of SLCMP War Heroes, no doubt won plaudits from the spectators.

The two-minute silence, as is the practice in all Army ceremonies, revered the memories of fallen War Heroes and signaled the onset of the day’s proceedings.

Paying due respect to the SLCMP Regiment, its regimental song reverberated around the hall, next, as all eyes were glued to the main stage, illuminated with varying colours. It left the floor for Major General E.K.J.K Wijayasiri, Colonel Commandant of SLCMP Regiment to deliver his formal welcome speech.

The concoction of dancing, singing, gymnastic and varying talents of exceptional nature and quality, presented by SLCMP members captivated and kept alive the packed audience injecting an unforgettable flavor until up to the last second.

The fusion of talents by way of SLCMP’s well trained performances such as martial arts, football action, brass band display, singing, concerting and suchlike kept the audience spell bound as they were greeted by roars of applause.

In appreciation of the Commander’s and his spouse’s presence at the occasion, the SLCMP Colonel Commandant, Major General E.K.J.K Wijayasiri presented two separate mementos to both distinguished invitees.

The history of Military Police in Sri Lanka traces its roots to the year 1949, in which the Ceylon Army was founded. The first Army Commander of the Ceylon Army, having realized the significance of discipline, raised the wing, Ceylon Military Police Force with the motto ‘Example Decemuse’ (By example shall we lead). At the beginning, there were only 10 Military Policemen who made up of the entire nucleus of the Military Police, which was then called the First provost Company. It had been Commanded by the Officer Commanding Major E.R.P. de Silva stationed at Echelon Square, Colombo.

Military Police Regimental Headquarters in 1975 moved to its present location at Elvitigala Mawatha, Narahenpita. In 1999, 1, 2, 3 Sri Lanka Military Police units were rotated to Colombo, Anuradhapura and Giritale. As of today, the Regimental Headquarters is manned by 35 officers and 943 other ranks of the 1 SLCMP Regiment.
