Maldivian President Nasheed Graces as Chief Guest at SLMA Commissioning Dinner

Tuesday evening’s most spectacular Commissioning Dinner, plus the customary Guest Night at Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) was of exceptional importance and memory to all 189 newly graduated officer cadets since it was perhaps the first-ever instance in life where they shared meals with a foreign Head of State, like President Mohamed Nasheed of the Republic of Maldives on the same dining table.

HE the President Mohamed Nasheed of the Republic of Maldives as the Chief Guest, at the invitation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya attended the Passing out Parade (PoP) earlier on Tuesday (27) morning as the first overseas President to have reviewed a parade in SLMA history.

Newly commissioned Cadet Officers in their ‘gentleman’ attire hours before they bid farewell to their fellow-comrades to take up new appointments elsewhere, interacted freely with each other for sometime as the formalities in the Dinner were taking shape elsewhere in the main dining hall. In accordance with military traditions, formal inauguration of the ceremony kicked off. After several toasts, the Chief Guest on the day, President Nasheed took the centre-stage and extended His Excellency’s greetings to all those who passed out that day.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, SLMA Commandant and several senior officers joined the table as invitees. As the final segment of the programme, one of the new Cadet Officers proposed the vote of thanks on behalf of all those were passing out on that day.
