Several choirs from leading Trincomalee churches joined hands together with the 22 Division Headquarters to mark Christmas and Season’s compliments as one more community project of the Army, aimed at fostering goodwill and reconciliation among all ethnicities, living in the district.
An elegantly-decorated and well-lit float with Christmas choirs aboard, organized by the 22 Division Headquarters on the instructions of its General Officer Commanding, Brigadier D. Hettiarachchi, toured Uppuveli, Nilaveli, Kuchchaveli, Thiriyaya, Kallarawa, Anuradhapura Junction area, 4th Mile Post, China Bay and Trincomalee township areas for 4 days as dusk fell. Hundreds of children and civilians in those areas lined up along the streets to enjoy the spectacle that took place after absence of nearly 30 years and the programme came in for praise. A specially-dressed Santa Claus on the Christmas float in the meantime distributed a stock of more than 300,000 lakhs of confectionaries, like chocolates and toffees among the children who were eagerly watching along the roads. The float presented Carols up until midnight on all four days.
The programme, assisted by clergy from all churches in the area, had choirs from St Mary’s Church, St Joseph Church, Mother Lardu Church, Mother Guavi Church (Gal Palliya) and Allers’ Garden Church as a gesture of goodwill and harmony.
Meanwhile, special decorative Christmas arrangements put up at the main entrance to the 22 Division Headquarters in connection with the Christ’s birth attracted the attention of the public. On December 25-26, a Christmas Musical Show entertained the public and produced a Santa Claus who distributed toffees, chocolates and calendars among the spectators who flocked to the 22 Division Headquarters premises.
