Disable War Heroes Twice Honoured: 100 More Specially Devised Three-wheelers Distributed

The unmatched service of the War Heroes who had sacrificed their legs and limbs for defence of the motherland fighting separatist terrorists were once again honoured and appreciated providing them with specially devised three-wheelers during a special ceremony organized jointly by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ranaviru Seva Authority (RSA) to mark HE the President’s assumption of office.

Wednesday (24) morning’s annual event that ensured the delivery of 100 new three-wheelers with special facilities and accessories for those differently able War Heroes at the MoD grounds at Galle Face, was graced by His Excellency, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, RSV Chairperson, Mrs Padma Wettewa, Tri-service Commanders and a host of other invitees.

The project that has already given away 700 such three-wheelers on concessionary basis to disable War Heroes in the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Police in the past few years, following a concept, mooted by the Secretary Defence, was made possible by the RSA with the support of the MoD Ranaviru Seva Fund, the government, private agencies and donors, both here and abroad.

Wednesday (24) morning’s distribution of those 100 three-wheelers among War Heroes on three-year period concessionary installment payments sans any interest, enables those handicapped War Heroes to use them for their routine transport and other movement requirements without any hassle or inconvenience since the public transport services lack such special technical requirements. Most of those beneficiaries included those who have been sent on retirement following disability or confined only to their home fronts on medical grounds.

Almost all those three-wheelers given away during Wednesday’s ceremony are equipped with special adjustments, technical accessories and other supportive elements that befit the physical disabilities of each recipient.

President Rajapaksa, despite his day’s extremely hectic commitments, took time off and ensured the symbolic presentation of a segment of those three-wheelers to a couple of disable War Heroes. President Rajapaksa, received on arrival by Mrs Wettewa and the Secretary Defence, however did not forget to greet a section of those recipients separately before he left the venue. Later on, Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary Defence, Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Roshan Goonetileke, Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Tisara Samarasinghe, Inspector General of the Police Mahinda Balasooriya, RSA Chairperson Mrs Padma Wettewa and several other invitees gave away the rest of those three-wheelers.
