The annual Katina pooja at Sri Naga Vihara in Jaffna was held on 18th and 19th November on a grand scale with a number of religious activities under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent Ven. Meegahajandure Gnanarathana Thero.
The Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) directed by Commander SF-J Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe extended its fullest support in organizing all the events that got underway since 18th evening.
The programme commenced after placing of the sacred casket (Karanduwa) on a caparisoned elephant by the Commander SF-J before it parade along the streets in an elegant procession with traditional drummers and dancers. The whole night Pirith chanting by Maha Sangha, which commenced around 9.00 p.m., followed the Katina Perehera which carried the Cheevara (robe) from the shrine at the 51 Division to be offered to the Maha Sangha, the following morning.
513 Brigade and the 51 Division had arranged the alms-giving for thirty monks on 19th at Kadurugoda Vihara and the Naga Vihara itself. A special Bodhi pooja on 19th evening marked the culmination of the Katina Pooja.
Members of the Security Forces, civilians and pilgrims from the south attended the event.
51 Division, commanded by Maj. Gen. Janaka Walgama was assisted by Navy, Air Force and Jaffna Municipal Council for organizing the event.
