Army in Their Thousands Join in 'Deyata Sevana' Tree Planting Campaign

In line with Monday’s countrywide tree planting campaign that marks the inauguration of the second term of office of HE, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, thousands of soldiers in Sri Lanka Army simultaneously launched elaborate formation-wise tree planting drives, giving pride of place to the one at the Army’s newest farm at Panaluwa, Hanwella this morning (15).  

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army who has taken a special interest in complete revival of Army-managed island-wide farms and dairies to coincide with the ‘Deyata Sevana’ national cultivation drive with the technical support of the private sector, took part in the mammoth tree planting ceremony at Panaluwa, Hanwella along with senior officers and soldiers.

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya with more than 1500 troops, assembled at Panaluwa Army firing range inducted the programme at the auspicious 10.07 a.m. after initially planting a mango sapling. Over 1500 tree saplings that bear fruits in the long run like mango, rambutan, coconut, veralu, jambu, orange, etc were planted by soldiers present at the occasion, covering an area of about 20 acres at the initial stage. At the next phase,  farming is to be extended to some 500 acres with the support of the private sector technical know-how.          

Lieutenant General Jayasuriya on arrival at the venue was received by senior officers and conducted to the planting site in a colourful procession. Messrs Muththiah Muralidaran and Pramodya Wickramasinghe, Directors Letsgrow Private Ltd, Brigadier Sunil Wanniarachchi, Colonel Commandant, Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps and several senior officers were associated with the occasion.  

Meanwhile, thousands of Army troops in respective Army farms, Headquarters and formations, giving their contribution to the countrywide campaign, joined in the programme. Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna and Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni also planted coconut saplings and other fruit trees Monday (15) morning in Jaffna and Vavuniya during brief ceremonies. 

Security Forces Headquarters, Jaffna planted 50,000 palmyrah, coconut and other tropical tree saplings in the Jaffna peninsula including both sideways on Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road. Here follows a breakdown in other areas with the numbers of saplings against each formation;

Security Forces Headquarters, Mullaittivu (9976), Security Forces Headquarters, Kilinochchi (26,195), Security Forces Headquarters, East (10,161), Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni (15,484) and Security Forces Headquarters, South (44,043).    

The Army vocational training camp at Kuttigala on Wednesday (17) will add their weight to the programme, planting more than one thousand trees. Similarly, on Friday (19) another tree planting campaign will take place with the participation of thousands of soldiers, attached to the Security Forces Headquarters, East.
