Commercial Bank Lends Helping Hand to Army for Community Development Work in Jaffna

Having recognized numerous humanitarian projects being continuously carried out by the Security Forces, Jaffna for people in Jaffna, the Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka has come forward to assist the Army.

Contended with the housing project for the homeless in Jaffna, initiated by the Commander, Security Forces, Jaffna Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, the Commercial Bank, has agreed to construct four houses for newly resettled people in the 52 Division area.

Two of such well-finished houses with spacious rooms, a tiled-pantry and electricity supply, constructed by 11th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) soldiers of the 522 Brigade were handed over to V. Premanathan and Alapiddi Rasa of Chavakachcheri during a ceremony, held at Kachchai Sunday (31.10.2010) morning. They had been in Kilinochchi welfare centres. The Commercial Bank financed the construction at a cost of about Rs. 800,000/=. The other two houses will be completed soon for two more families.

The Chief Operating Officer, Commercial Bank Mr. Ravi Dias addressing the gathering disclosed his pleasure for having the opportunity to help the needy in Jaffna in association with the Army. The Bank donated furniture, kitchenware and many other domestic items worth nearly about Rs. 25,000/= to each house.

Civil Affairs office of the 522 Brigade at the same time had arranged another donation of sewing machines to four women who had earlier been forcibly conscripted by the LTTE and later rehabilitated by the government. The Bureau of Commissioner General Rehabilitation gave them vocational training in sewing at Thelippalai Rehabilitation centre in Jaffna. Sri Sathya Sai Sewa Organization presided by Jaffna District Court Judge Mr. R. Vasanthasenan sponsored the donation.

At the same time, a stock of agriculture equipment was also distributed among some farmers by the 522 Brigade with the sponsorship of the Commercial Bank.

Commander SF-J, during the same function, handed over the keys of four houses hitherto used by Army deployed in the area to their owners, Mr. K.N. Ruban of Manipay, Mr. N. Paramanathan of Kodikamam, Mrs. D. Navamani of Kandarmadam and Mr. Rajaratnam of Meesalai. Those houses were in the possession of the terrorists before they fell into the hands of the Army. Houses and surroundings were de-mined, cleaned and renovated by the troops for civilians.

The Sunday’s programme was made more interesting with performance of the dancing girls of the Ramavil welfare centre and nearby schools.

Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe at the end of the function thanked and congratulated officers and soldiers of the 11VIR who were involved in construction of houses.

In addition to distinguished guests from donor organizations, General Officer Commanding 52 Division Brigadier Anura Sudhasinghe, Commander 522 Division Colonel Hemantha Bandara, Commanding Officer 11 VIR and a large crowed were present.
