The Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) in connection with its recent 22nd anniversary conducted a series of religious observances and social services.
An all-night Pirith chanting ceremony at the VIR Regimental Headquarters, Boyagane, attended by Colonel Commandant, Major General R.V Samaratunge, took place on Wednesday (14) amidst a large gathering of officers and other ranks. Major General Samaratunge offering a tray of betel in keeping with ancient traditions invited the monks for chanting after the relic casket was brought to the venue in procession.

On the following day (15), VIR troops carried out a Shramadana (self-help) cleaning programme in and around the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital premises with the participation of a large group of soldiers and officers. In the same afternoon, a representative section visited the inmates at Maliyadeva Children’s Home and offered them a lunch treat to mark the event.
Late in the evening a special holy mass at Malpitiya St. Sebastian’s Church blessed the anniversary and the VIR troops serving the Army.
