Villagers in their Hundreds Volunteer &;amp; Clean up New 'Abimansala-2' Project Complex

Hundreds of villagers in and around new ‘Abimansala-2’ (wellness resort for dependent war heroes) complex at Wilpitawatte, Kamburupitiya, taking their own initiative and showing overwhelming support, participated in a mammoth Shramadana campaign Sunday (4) morning and cleaned the entire wellness resort premises, ahead of its ceremonial opening on November 10, 2012.

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, the driving force behind the speedy realization of the project, meant for totally dependent War Heroes of the Southern Province who coincidentally made a surprise visit to the project site to assess the last-minute final touches as regards the forthcoming opening ceremony, was highly taken up by the sentiments and keen interest of those volunteers who were there in their hundreds, including women.

Those voluntary well-wishers as well as several village officials (Grama Niladhari), together with community leaders, representing area-based voluntary organizations and associations, have got together to unanimously agree for conduct of the Shramadana campaign as their appreciative share to the project, considering the sacred nature of the mission. Amazingly, it was found that those well-wishers had got their own refreshments/meals, too organized among themselves, without causing the slightest burden to the Army personnel, busy attending to the remainder of different arrangements on the site.

Touched by their warmth and thoughtfulness, the Commander took time off to mingle with them for some time and shared a couple of thoughts with them since they would in future remain the nearest neighbours to the wellness resort. The Army Chief also recalled how several such groups from the same area, including monks, offered their labour to the earth preparation stage of the project, about nine months ago. The Commander thanking those initiatives and all organizers of the move, expressed his gratitude to all those who had gathered there for the Shramadana campaign on the eve of the resort’s inauguration.

During his stay, the Commmander after attending a few rounds of brief discussions with officers and other ranks working there, gave necessary instructions and directions as the opening ceremony is going to be a grand one with a lot of dignitaries and invitees.

The new ‘Abimansala-2’ is to house about 50 South-based disable war heroes who are dependent for the rest of their precious lives.
