'Uttama Pooja Tribute' Medals Awarded to Rana Viru families


A felicitation ceremony to parents and families of war heroes was held Thursday (Dec 22) at the Nuwara Eliya Town Hall.

The program jointly organized by the Ministry of Defence and Ranaviru Seva Authority was held under the patronage of Secretary Defence Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa this morning (22).

The ceremony was organized to award medals to parents, wives and next of kin of military personnel in the Nuwara Eliya District who scarified their lives for the sake of permanent peace in the island-nation.

The 'Uttama Pooja' project, brainchild of Secretary Defence was initiated as a tribute to the countless sacrifices made by those families of Sri Lanka's bravest men and women. "Time and again medals and decorations have been awarded to valiant men and women of the Security forces and the Police. In addition, we understand that it is our bounden duty to pay tribute to the equally important contribution made over three decades by parents, wives and children of such brave individuals", said Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa delivering the guest speech at the event.

"District Ranawiru Seva Authorities are taking measures to address the grievances of the families of the Police and Service Personnel who have made the supreme sacrifice. Due consideration is given to issues on housing and education of their children while action is being initiated with regard to payment of compensations and salaries" he further said.

Over 1400 next of kin of War heroes were honoured at this felicitation ceremony: Army (1322) Navy (36), Air Force (16) and the Police (30).

Ranaviru Seva Authority Chairperson Mrs. Padma Wethethewa, Military Liaison Officer (MOD) Maj. Gen (Rtd) Palitha Fernando,  Nuwara Eliya District Secretary, Security Forces Commander (South) Maj Gen. S.R Manawadu were also among the distinguished invitees gathered. (Courtesy: MoD)
