Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army, just 48 hours before the New Year - 2012 dawns, contributed to one more worthy welfare project, meant for War Heroes who lost their legs during the Wanni Humanitarian Operations.
Presidential Advisor Gamini Gunaratne (US Bio Analytical System), Mr Prasanna Rupasinghe (US Intel Corporation) and Bangladesh national, Prof Abul Hussain (University of George Meson), all of them, resident in the US, through Los Angeles Sri Lanka Deshapremi Organization (Sri Lanka Patriots’ Association in Los Angeles), donated those high quality artificial limbs to 40 affected War Heroes as a mark of recognition of their invaluable services to the nation.
Friday (30) morning’s simple ceremony at Army Headquarters, coordinated by Rana Viru Seva Authority (RVSA), in cooperation with Major General R.V Samaratunge, Director Rehabilitation, saw those 40 disable War Heroes receive cash vouchers to buy those high standard artificial limbs from local agents in Sri Lanka.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as the Chief Guest received those vouchers which were symbolically handed over to him by those philanthropists at the beginning of the ceremony after the formal welcome speech was made by Lieutenant Colonel P.A.D.T.U Perera, Coordinating Officer, RVSA.
Under the project, 37 Army War Heroes, three War Heroes from the Navy, Air Force and the Police were the benefactors. Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya gave away those symbolic cheques to the recipients along with Ms Gunaratne, the daughter of one of the donors.
At the end of the brief ceremony, the Commander thanked the donors for their gesture and appreciated their thoughts on the roles of those valiant War Heroes. He also took time off to speak to the War Heroes who were associated with the occasion.
