OVERSEAS philanthropists continue to lend their helping hand to war-affected families in Wanni following initiatives taken by state agencies in coordination with Wanni Security Forces Headquarters.
Two UK based donors, Mr Anura Perera and Mr Rayan Perera spent Rs 39 million for renovation and construction of fifty-six dilapidated, partly-damaged and totally destroyed houses, belonging to civilians in Pirappanmaduwa and Kokeliya villages in Vavuniya district. Those civilians had fled into various other places, abandoning their dwellings as LTTE violence escalated in the area before the war was over.
The worthy project, coordinated by Ven Yatirawana Wimala Thero, Patron, Thisarana Sarana Foundation, saw 34 houses in Pirappanmaduwa and 22 houses in Kokeliya converted to be fit for human residence following renovations done with the help of donors. Those two UK based philanthropists have spent Rs 35 million for repairs at Pirappanmaduwa and Rs 4 million for renovations at Kokeliya village.
The ceremony to hand over those renovated houses to inhabitants took place on Sunday (6) in the presence of a gathering of a minister, state officials and senior Army and Police officers and inhabitants in those villages.
Minister for Resettlement, Mr Milroy Fernando, Governor for Northern Province Major General G.A Chandrasiri (Retd), District Secretary for Vavuniya Ms P.S.M Charles, Competent Authority for Displaced Northern civilians and Commander, Security Forces Major General Kamal Gunaratne, 56 Division Commander Brigadier N.A.P.C Napagoda, Senior Army and Police officers attended the occasion.
