Tsunami Victims Remembered in Trincomalee

The 7th year after the Tsunami tragedy was commemorated jointly by the 22 Division Headquarters, Trincomalee and the People’s Bank, giving priority to religious observances and distribution of books among Sunday Daham school students.

The alms-giving to 24 Buddhist monks, selected from different temples, took place at the Trincomalee People’s Bank office premises on Monday (26) after the national observance of one-minute silence was observed.

Donation of books to 369 students afterwards occurred at the Trincomalee Vivekananda Maha Vidyalaya Auditorium amidst a large gathering of students and parents. Coordinated and organized by 22 Division troops, both programmes received patronage from the People’s Bank at Trincomalee.

Everybody attending the commemorative ceremonies at 9.30 a.m. recalled the memories of those people who perished in the devastating Tsunami which claimed more than 40,000 lives in several parts of the island in the year 2004.
