In less than a day, Army Engineer troops responding swiftly to a Presidential directive inaugurated the preparation and renovation of the playgrounds and constructions at Hewessa Primary school playground, Yattapatha Primary school playground and the 7-mile post public playground in Wallawita –Matugama areas on Sunday (24) on the instructions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army.
His Excellency, the President during his ‘Gama Samaga Pilisandarak’ programme at Matugama on Saturday (23) entrusted the above task to the Sri Lanka Army in response to a request made by students, parents and teachers since they remain long-felt needs for those schools. Keeping full faith in the competence of the Army, HE the President instructed the Officers present there to undertake the task and fulfill those aspirations.
Accordingly, on the instructions of the Commander of the Army, General Shavendra Silva, the Chief Field Engineer Major General Nihal Amarasekara directed his troops to commence work on the following day (24) itself in less than 10 hours after the request was made by HE the President. Utilizing skilled manpower and technical expertise of 5 Field Engineer Regiment troops and plant machinery, the projects are continuing in full swing at the time this report was filed.
