10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (10 SLLI) and 3 Commando Regiment (3 CR) troops of the 652 Brigade of the 65 Division under the Security Forces - Wanni (SFHQ-W) on Saturday (19) evening rushed to the Vavunikulam tank area in the general area of Mallavi and rescued one civilian and recovered three dead bodies of the same family after the private Bolero cab carrying them plunged into the tank by accident.
Those members of the same family, according to the Police, had visited the tank during a tour to the area when the vehicle skidded and toppled into the tank, in which tank's water has reached spill levels due to rainstorms in the area.
On the instructions of Major General Tikiri Dissanayake, General Officer Commanding (GOC), 65 Division, Brigade Commander, 652 Brigade with his troops rushed to the location on hearing the tragedy and rescued one person who was sinking in the water. After about two hours, those troops recovered dead bodies of three more persons, father, daughter and a boy who accompanied them. During the operation, troops were able to rescue the son of the deceased father.
