The 'Caritas - Human Development Centre (HUDEC) Jaffna', the social development arm of the Catholic Church in Jaffna launched a mega tree planting campaign under the theme of “Friendship Journey of Caritas Family to North” at Eluthumadduwal in Jaffna in collaboration with the Security Force HQ-Jaffna on Tuesday (09).
Rt. Rev. Dr Justin B Gnanapragasam, Bishop of Jaffna and Chairman Caritas Sri Lanka – Social and Economic Development Centre (SEDES) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, together with the Commander Security Forces Jaffna Major General Priyantha Perera and the Assistant District Secretary Jaffna. Security Force Headquarters-Jaffna extended the fullest support to make the programme a success on request, made by the Director of HUDEC- Caritas Jaffna Rev. Fr. S. Eugene Francis.
After multi religious observances, the welcome speech was delivered by Rev Fr. S Eugene Francis, Director, HUDEC Caritas Jaffna at the venue.
Next, followed the unveiling of a plaque by the Bishop of Jaffna to symbolize the occasion and the release of pigeons by the Commander SF-J promoting sentiments of peace and reconciliation among the ethnic groups.
The Chief Guest and others were afterwards invited to plant 2000 saplings such as Mango, Orange, Guava, Jack, Cashew, Pomegranate, etc in the area.
During the speech of Major General Priyantha Perera, he thanked the Bishop of Jaffna for inviting him to the tree planting drive which goes in parallel with guidelines of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Miss Nithila Mariampillai, Administrative Secretary HUDEC Caritas Jaffna, in which she offered the organization's gratitude to the troops for their contribution.
After the end of the programme, the Commander Security Forces Jaffna and other invitees had a look at a few domestically -produced home needs for sale by low income group families who were benefited from the assistance of the HUDEC organizations and shared a couple of views with them.
