Thrilling &;amp; Scaring '4 x 4 Expedition' Set to Kick Off


The newest and exciting ‘4 x 4 Expedition 2015’ on wheels, introduced and organized by Sri Lanka Army’s Commando Regiment (CR) with the catchy slogan ‘Experience Sri Lanka with Commandos’ is well geared to launch its second mission on August 2, it was announced at a special Media briefing Thursday (2) evening at Nelum Pokuna auditorium.

This novel feature which saw its birth last year covering a distance of 776 km between Point Pedro and Kuda Oya CR Training School within five days, will this year too, repeat along the same route across the Eastern coastal belt, the Media briefing was told by Major General Prasanna Silva, Colonel of the Regiment, CR.   

The expedition is to attract 4 wheel vehicles which are confident in driving along sandy beaches and capable of crossing Manalkadu sand dunes, Chalai lagoons, muddy roads, narrow paths, dense jungles and rural villages along the Eastern coastal belt until the expedition reaches its climax upon reaching Kuda Oya.

“Those participants in 4 wheelers will experience camping in five different areas and enjoy interacting with locals in respective areas, taste of different local food items, sea baths, boat rides, filming, participation in games, etc,” Major General Prasanna Silva further told the Media.

The novel expedition, designed covering five legs; Point Pedro to Nayaru (147 km) on Day 01, Nayaru to Dehiwatta (146 km) on Day 02, Dehiwatta to Maduru Oya (176 km) on Day 03, Maduru Oya to Arugam Bay (165 km) on Day 04, Arugam Bay to Uva Kuda Oya CR Training School (140 km) on Day 05 and is open to 4 x 4 standard vehicles, 4 x 4 modified class vehicles and medium duty and heavy duty sport utility vehicles who could enjoy this exceptional motor expedition.

On the final Day (August 08), Challenge and Standard Event (4 x 4 Extreme) will remain open to the participants at Kuda Oya CR Training School.

The ideal ‘4 x 4 Expedition’ which has received the full backing of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, suits families, corporate executives, road enthusiasts, adventure lovers and motorcar fans.
 
Setting out the objectives of the mammoth spectacle, Major General Silva went on record saying that the proceeds from the project are twofold; fund-raising for CR infrastructure improvements and promotion of adventure sports in Sri Lanka.
 
Tourist Board of Sri Lanka is the main sponsor of the event while Coca Cola, Lion Brewery and Brandix provide co-sponsorships to make this event a roaring success like last year.

Mr. Ruwan Chandra, Director General Sports, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, together with Mr. Milanka Gajanayaka, Managing Director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Ms. Gayathri Dassanayake, Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Mr. Masitha de Thabrew, Assistant Director, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, Mr. Roshan Watawala, Director Sports MTV , Mr.Ravi Dadlani, CEAT Vice President,  Mr. M.M Thilakarathna, Acting Deputy Manager of Ceylon petroleum Corporation. Mr. Sam Chandrasoma, President, Nissan Patrol Club of Sri Lanka attended the briefing.

Major General Prasanna de Silva, Colonel of the Regiment, CR, Brigadier H.H.A.S.P.K Senaratne, Commander Commando Brigade, Brigadier L.W.H Gamage, CR Center Commandant and Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera, Acting Military Spokesman were also associated in the Media briefing.

More than 75 4 x 4 enthusiasts will overcome challenging terrains along the coastal belt beginning from Point Pedro on August 03.
