SVAB President Keeps to the Pledge, Hands Over House to War Hero

Keys of the new house constructed for the totally disabled War Hero, Corporal U.J. Nandakumara of 9th Battalion, Gemunu Watch (GW) in his own plot of land in Wanduraba, Galle,   was handed over to him by President Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya on Friday (10).

The cost of the construction worth at Rs.800,000/=, was jointly sponsored by Sri Lanka Mobitel Ltd and the renowned vocalist, Ms Saheli Rochana Gamage with the coordination of the SVAB. Ms Saheli has donated the proceeds of the Mobitel Ringing Tone of her number one hit ‘Ayubowewa Maha Rajaneni’ towards this SVAB project.  Soldiers of the Engineer Service Regiment contributed their skill and labour to build this house, with two bed rooms, a kitchen and a washroom.

This is just another house of many, organized by the SVAB with the support of munificent donors, constructed for disabled War Heroes on a concept of Mrs Jayasuriya who has a vision for looking after differently able War Heroes with much dedication and welcomes more donors for worthy cause of this nature.

Head of Site Acquisition of Mobitel Colonel (Retd) Athula Lanka Dewa and Ms Saheli Rochana Gamage joined Mrs Jayasuriya for this house warming ceremony which took place honouring cultural rites and traditions. Senior members of the SVAB were also present.

This War Hero who had lost both his eyes in Wanni Humanitarian Operations, was receiving treatment when he caught the eye of Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya who was on her very first visit to the Military Hospital, Colombo after taking office last year and learnt his housing need which she pledged to settle.
