SVAB House Construction Project Inspires Commandos to Erect Four New Houses to Fellow-Soldiers

Highly reputed Commando Regiment (CR) of the Army, mindful of invaluable services of their fallen, disable and still serving War Heroes, was keen on building four new houses for their fellow-Commandos in Kumbaloluwa, Veyangoda and Nittambuwa areas with kind patronage received from the general public and philanthropists.

Construction of three new houses, each worth about Rs 2.5 million was made possible due to generosity, shown by Mr P.A. Anil of Veyangoda Nemsiyuji Business Limited who donated a 30 perch of land exclusively for this purpose.

Next of kin of fallen Staff Sergeant K.G.N.L.R Perera (CR), Corporal N.H. Saumya Kumara (CR), disable War Hero Corporal M.B. Amarasinghe (CR) and the Commando, Sergeant B. Sarath, were the recipients of those four new houses, built in close proximity to one another in Veyangoda, Kumbaloluwa and Nittambuwa areas.

One of those new houses, donated to Sergeant B. Sarath of CR on Monday (9) signifies the appreciation of his excellent contribution to the success of Commando Operations in the battlefield during the peak of LTTE terrorism, a few years ago. Sergeant Sarath, still serving the CR has won accolades and recommendations from his superiors for his exceptional skills, displayed during warfare.

Ven. Pannila Ananda Thero of Attanagalla Rajamaha Vihara, Businessmen, Mr Chula Sugath Wickramarachchi of Veyangoda, Mr Chandana Upul of Veyangoda and Mr Nihal Samson of Veyangoda have generously and jointly contributed to the cost of the construction by supplying building materials, etc. Fellow CR troops offered their construction expertise and erected those four houses, providing free labour.

Ceremonial opening of those four houses on Monday (9) afternoon by Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB), added more significance to the occasion since all CR troops who provided labour to the project, were also felicitated at the same venue, awarding special certificates of appreciation.

After Mrs Jayasuriya was welcomed, the day’s itinerary began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp and observance of one-minute silence in honour of fallen War Heroes. After a brief Anusaasanaa (oration) of the Maha Sangha, keys for all the houses were delivered to the recipients by Mrs Jayasuriya, the Chief Guest at the ceremony as Seth Pirith continued invoking blessings.

One of the recipients gratefully acknowledged the generosity of the donors at the ceremony and expressed his emotional sentiments on behalf of all house recipients. Award of special mementos to those recipients during the ceremony brought tears to their eyes and marked a solemn moment. CR Seva Vanitha Unit honoured the presence of Mrs Jayasuriya presenting her with a symbol of appreciation at the occasion.

Towards the end of the programme, Mrs Jayasuriya closely supervised each section in every new house, together with other SVAB officials and senior CR officers.

The SVAB’s house construction project, supported by Mrs Jayasuriya, took root in every Regiment across the Army in the recent past and has been very popular among soldiers since many of them are largely benefited by this project.
