SVAB's 75th New House Under '150 House Construction Project' Vested in War Hero Family

Two more new houses, built by the funds of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) under the SVAB’s ongoing ‘150 House Construction Project’ in appreciation of the indelible service of the War Heroes, were vested in Ranaviru families during separate ceremonies at Hikkaduwa and Elpitiya on Wednesday (20).

These two new houses were the 74th and 75th that were completed under the SVAB’s ongoing ‘150 House Construction Project’. 25 more houses under the same project are in progress elsewhere in the country. Today’s opening of the 75th new house in Elpitiya marks a landmark in the SVAB project.

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, President, SVAB, who took the initiative in this project attended those house warming ceremonies as the Chief Guest, accompanied by several senior SVAB members and Army officers.

War Hero, Corporal N.A.W.P Alwis of 7th Battalion Gemunu Watch (GW) sustained injuries to his right arm and left leg when he was fighting against terrorists at Puliyankulam on 7th October 1997 and records a 60 per cent permanent disability.

Corporal Alwis, a father of three children however, was twice blessed when HE the President as recent as July last year donated him with a 10 perch land in the Varagaswilawatta state land in the Arachchikanda Grama Seva Division after his requirement was brought to the President’s notice.

However, although he started building a new house in the allotted land, he could not continue its construction due to lack of financial resources, but his appeal for financial support for completion of his new house drew the attention of the SVAB which in turn decided to allocate a sum of Rs 1 million for completion of the project.

The other recipient, War Hero Sergeant H.P Ajith of 11th Battlion Gemunu Watch of Ruwangiri Junction, Walahena, Elpitiya as the fight against terrorism was reaching a decisive phase, made the supreme sacrifice on 22nd January 2009 while fighting in Vilawatta, Mullaittivu.

His wife, together with two daughters and a son approached the SVAB for assistance to put up a new house in the plot of land at Ruwangiriyawatta, Elpitiya  which was bought by the family earlier soon after the death of their beloved War Hero.

The SVAB during its mobile relief programme came across the wife of the fallen War Hero who sought the SVAB’s financial assistance to build a house for their family. Accordingly, the SVAB released a sum of Rs 1 million on behalf of the fallen War Hero for construction of the new house.

The entire construction of both houses was completed by fellow-GW soldiers within a matter of few months.

On Wednesday (20) Mrs Jayasuriya, Chief Guest after visiting the new housing sites at Hikkaduwa and Elpitiya warmed these two new houses after cutting a ribbon and attending to rites and rituals. Mrs Jayasuriya handed over the keys to the recipients at the auspicious minute as blessings of the Maha Sangha continued. Afterwards, Mrs Jayasuriya gave away two separate gift parcels to the disable War Hero, Corporal N.A.W.P Alwis and the spouse of fallen War Hero, Mrs Lalani Chandralatha on the same occasion.

Mrs Chintha Udumalagala, Chairperson, GW Seva Vanitha Unit, family members of both War Heroes, SVAB members, Army officers and a large gathering attended the ceremonies.

Towards the end of the ceremony at Elpitiya, the spouse of a fallen War Hero who had already received an SVAB sponsored house earlier for her family with children approached Mrs Jayasuriya and burst into tears, extending their sense of gratitude for the high quality house they have received from the SVAB.
