Major General Jagath Gunawardena, the retiring 55th Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army and the 17th Colonel Commandant of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers (SLE) received a customary farewell on 14 December 2020 when he called at the SLE Regimental Headquarters, Panagoda before he relinquishes his duties after a productive service of more than 35 years.
On the last day of his service, Major General Jagath Gunawardena in conformity with military traditions was warmly welcomed by the Centre Commandant, Brigadier Mangala Mayadunna and accorded a Guard Turnout on his arrival at the venue.
Afterwards, he laid a floral wreath at the War Heroes’ monument in remembrance of fallen War Heroes. Subsequently, he was honoured in a ceremonial parade. Afterwards, accompanied by Senior Officers he took part in an All-Rank tea at the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess. Towards the end of the day’s programme, all Officers and Other Ranks after the tea in a moving gesture, honoured him in a street line farewell as his vehicle began to move out of the premises.
