Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Celebrates Its 133rd Anniversary

Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force proudly celebrated its 133rd Anniversary at the Headquarters premises in Salawa Kosgama on 01 April 2014 under the auspices of Commandant Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Major General S.A.P.P Samarasinghe.

He was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Commandant Major General W.D.L.P Wickramasinghe and Principal Staff Officer, Brigadier W.A.N.M Weerasinghe at the entrance. He was subsequently accorded a Guard of Honour after which the National Flag and the Volunteer Force flags were hoisted by the Commandant and Deputy Commandant of SLAVF, followed by reciting of the National Anthem and the Army song to the tune of the Army band in attendance.

The Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force has fully extended its responsibility to the Nation during the past 133 years of its history and 140 Officers and 3728 Other Ranks had made the supreme sacrifice while 168 Officers and 3642 Other Ranks being wounded in action. A minute’s silence was then observed while remembering the great service extended by the Volunteer Force personnel during the period of the Humanitarian Operations in freeing the country from the 30 year-long terrorism.

The Commandant at this important milestone addressed the troops whilst touching upon several aspects pertaining to the wellbeing of the members at large.

He remembered the right leadership of HE the President with the continual guidance of the Hon Secretary of Defense paved the way towards peace in the country as well as the continuous cooperation and guidance extended by Commander of the Army Lt Gen R M D Ratnayake. In his speech the Commandant underlined the requirement of accelerating the constructions of the new home of the Volunteer Force, extending the assistance in improving professional competence, welfare and administrative matters of the members in the field on priority basis.

He further appreciated the achievements of the members of 103 Volunteer Battalions in national and international sports arena as well as in numerous other fields including foreign peace keeping missions.

An impressive ‘Perahera’ program has been, organized by the Headquarters in the evening where the sacred casket and the piruwana pothwahanse were very respectfully carried into the pulpit. All night ‘Pirith’ chanting was accomplished at the camp premises and the 133rd Anniversary Day’s programme culminated in the morning on 02 April with an alms-giving to Buddhist monks.
