SLACAL Troops Expand Their Role & Take to Carrot Cultivation

Troops serving the Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture and Livestock (SLACAL) under the Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) adding one more dimension to their cultivation of varieties of crops took to the cultivation of Carrot for the first time in a land patch of 3.5 acres under the Phase 1 at Dayagama a few days ago as per directions of Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army who had already mobilized troops to support the government's national Food Security drive.

The cultivation of carrot that would cover a land extent of 25 acres in future after preparation of soil under several phases, aimed to supplement and promote the island’s food security programme. Presently 19 Army farms have swept into action after the establishment of the Green Agriculture Steering Committee (GASC) by Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander of the Army in order to support the national need.

The SLACAL formally raised on 4th January 2021 is already into cultivation of all types of crops in Army-owned farms and lands. By scientifically evaluating soil condition and applying new techniques, those troops are now on the verge of planting Carrot seeds at Dayagama.

Major General Shiran Abeysekera, Colonel Commandant of Sri Lanka Army Corps of Agriculture & Livestock and Director General Financial Management (DGFM) of the Army and the Director, Directorate of Agriculture & Livestock, Brigadier Arosha Rajapaksha are providing necessary guidelines for the success of the new project.
