SL Soldiers Rescue UN Driver &;amp; Vehicle from Mob Violence

Soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army serving 231 Brigade area in Vandaramulla, Batticaloa took timely action to rescue a UN vehicle and its driver that had come under attack of a violent mob of about 1500 people after the UN vehicle had met with an accident Wednesday (02) evening killing one female.

The vehicle on its way to the UN office at Batticaloa knocked down two women who were pedalling along the main road (A15) on a bicycle and another female bystander, killing one of them and seriously injuring the other two. This accident led to a tense situation among the villages who tried to attack the vehicle and the driver with stones and set fire to the vehicle.

The soldiers of 12 (Volunteer) Sri Lanka Artillery regiment serving in the area promptly rushed to the scene and rescued the UN driver and the vehicle by taking them to safety.

Due to the accident, Ms Ravi Kumar Thirikalaiwanai (30) succumbed to her injuries while the other two, Ms Pakyarasa Sumathi (40) and Ms Shiwalingam Sindujani (12) were admitted to Batticaloa General Hospital for treatment. Two soldiers also sustained minor injuries in the commotion whilst trying to rescue the and the vehilcle.

The soldiers also took necessary steps to assist the family of the deceased for funeral arrangements.
