Sinha (SLSR) Swimmers Win the Day with Overall Championship

Providing an impetus to Army personnel, engaged in water sports, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army early this morning (7) drove to the Mount Lavinia beach front and flagged off the ‘3rd Inter Regiment 2-Mile Open Water Swimming Championship’, competed by 235 male swimmers and 12 females of the Army.

The final leg, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Aquatic Sports Committee, chaired by Major General Indrajith Vidyananda, was graced by Major General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Staff, Major General Rukmal Dias, Commandant, Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General Ajith Wijesinghe, Military Secretary, Major General Jagath Gunawardene, Master General Ordnance, Major General C.S Atipola, Logistic Commander, a host of Officers and Other Rankers.

In the male category, the overall team championship was won by swimmers of the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) and the team runner-up slot was clinched by Gajaba Regiment (GR) competitors. Woman swimmers in the 1 Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps (SLAWC) carried away the Team Championship while 4 SLAWC swimmers became the Team Runner-up.

However, Gajaba Regiment (GR) swimmers with the highest aggregate points were qualified to receive the Challenge Trophy in the Men’s (team) category. Similarly, 1 SLAWC female swimmers clinched the Challenge Trophy. Lance Corporal A.M.A.S Abeysinghe of 3 Sri Lanka Armoured Corps (SLAC) was adjudged the Best Individual (Men) Swimmer in the tournament and his counterpart, Corporal R.K Jayatilleke of 4 (Volunteer) SLAWC was the Best Woman Swimmer.

Towards the end of the event, trophies, shields and certificates were awarded by the day’s Chief Guest, Commander of the Army and other Senior Officers. Several eye-catching dancing spectacles coloured the brief event. url clone | Shop: Nike
