SFHQ-Jaffna Initiative Takes Motor Racing & Riding to Jaffna Peninsula

A day with refreshingly novel experience perhaps for the first time in the history of Jaffna, dawned on Saturday (23) for Northerners when racing cars and motorbikes of the 'Northern Speed Rally-2019' invaded several selected Jaffna roads, giving excitement and thrill to both youngsters and all walks of life who lined up along roadsides to watch the motor racing rally, launched on a conceptual notion of the Chairman of Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee, Major General Dharshana Hettiarrachchi who is also the Commander, Security Forces-Jaffna.

The Security Force Headquarters – Jaffna (SFHQ –J) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Army Motor Sports Committee, Sri Lanka Motor Racing Association and Jaffna Motor Sports Club organized this ' Northern Speed Rally-2019' in the Jaffna peninsula during 22-24 March 2019 with a view to popularizing the racing game, particularly among motor sport enthusiasts.

The formal inauguration of the event got to a start on Friday (22) at the Jaffna Municipal grounds in the presence of Mr Emmanuel Arnold, Mayor of Jaffna.

Officials in Motor Racing Associations where a special road show of popular motor sports men in Sri Lanka with their vehicles was staged. On Saturday (23), 13 prominent motor car drivers and 10 motorcycle riders, comprised of both Army and Police Special Task Force sportsmen, competed in the off-road track in Vettalakerni area as the first stage of the rally.

At the end of the second stage on Sunday (24), the drivers and riders paraded towards the Jaffna Municipal grounds to take part in the colourful awarding ceremony, followed by a super broad show that attracted the residents in Jaffna area. The closing programme was conducted in the presence of the Commander Security Forces – Jaffna, Mr. Emmanuel Arnold Mayor of Jaffna, General Officers Commanding of 51, 52 and 55 Divisions, Senior Army Officers, Government Officials, the President of Sri Lanka Motor Racing Association Mr. Tzwan Ahmad, the President of Jaffna Motor Sports Club Mr. Pararnesh and members of both motor sports clubs. Military and Police personnel, police personnel, civilians and drivers and riders witnessed the arrangement.

To be in parallel with this novel project, stationery and school bags to 150 deserving students in low-income families in the area were also given away before a gathering of officers in the 55 Division and Sri Lanka Motor Racing Association officials. 55 Division organized the donation project.
