To coincide with the international women’s day, troops of the Security Force HQ, Jaffna with sponsoring support received from the private sector agencies gave away 1000 dry ration packets of nutritients to needy, pregnant and widowed women of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim ethnicity after inviting them to Jaffna's Chunnakam south playground in Jaffna on Saturday (6).
The relief treat, conceptualized by Major General Priyantha Perera, Commander Security Forces-Jaffna in line with the civil-military cooperation activities, suggested by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army was generously sponsored by Hemas Consumers Pvt Ltd, Nestle Lanka Pvt Ltd, Maliban Biscuits Pvt Ltd, 'Manusath Derana' community assistance project and Colombo Tharana Foundation at the request of the Jaffna Commander.
The distribution ceremony, headed by Major General Priyantha Perera, Commander Security Forces –Jaffna was blessed by priests of all major faiths who delivered orations at the location before distribution got underway. Each relief pack consists of rice, dhall, sugar, milk powder, tea, wheat flour, tinned fish, spices, cereals and more nutritious equipment. In addition, a stock of infants' needs including mosquito nets, pamphers, milk bottles, sanitary ware and other essentials were also given away to selected women on the same occasion.
Delivering a brief speech, Jaffna Commander thanked sponsoring agencies and told the gathering that the armed forces are always prepared to protect and assist the general public in whatever the way possible. At the conclusion of the programme, Mrs T Thayani, Chairperson Jaffna Women's Front appreciated the contribution of the troops for this charity event and thanked the Commander SFHQ-J for his leadership towards this sort of relief work with the blessings of the commander of the army.
Religious leaders of all religions, General Officer Commanding of the 51 Division, Commander Forward Maintenance Area (North), Senior Officers of the SFHQ-J, Brigade Commanders, representatives of Nestle, Maliban agencies, few Officers and Other Ranks were associated with the arrangement.
