Service Corps Taekwondo Athletes Win the Day & Carries Away Championship


The Army Taekwondo Championship Award ceremony, subsequent to the successful completion of the three-day (Sept 8-11) long Taekwondo Tournament, took place Monday (12) evening at the Panagoda Army Cantonment gymnasium.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya as Chief Guest and His Excellency Choi Jong Moon, Ambassador for South Korea as Guest of Honour participated in the award ceremony, amidst a large gathering of senior Army Officers, Taekwondo athletes and invitees.

The Army Taekwondo Committee, chaired by Brigadier B.C.J.F Rodrigo who is also the President, National Taekwondo Federation, attracted more than three hundred Taekwondo athletes from 13 Regiments in the Army for the tournament under three categories; (1) Women’s Inter Unit Championship (2) Novices Championship (3) Taekwondo Championship.

2 Sri Lanka Women’s Corps Regiment (2 SLWC), Gemunu Watch Regiment and Sri Lanka Army Service Corps Regiment clinched Championships respectively covering categories specified above and proudly carried away their Championships during the ceremony. The tournament was held this year for the 9th consecutive year.  

The South Korean Development Agency (KOIKA) of the South Korean Embassy sponsored training facilities as well as purchase of equipment, needed by those Army Taekwondo athletes. They also made the services of Korean referees and head coach, available to the Army Taekwondo Committee at the request of authorities.  

Both Commander of the Army and the visiting diplomat congratulated the winners on their achievements and assured them of the fullest support for promotion of the martial art in the future too. Trophies were presented to the winners by both special guests.     

Mrs Manjulika Jayasuriya, president, Seva Vanitha Army Branch was also associated with the award of trophies to the winners. Senior officers of the Army too attended the occasion.
