Secretary Defence Meets Ex-combatants Working on Crab Fattening Farm

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the sidelines of his visit to Jaffna Thelippalai Mahajana Vidyalaya for opening of the new three-storied building paid a casual visit to Kayt’s Karampan Crab Fattening Farm on Friday (24).

He spoke to several reintegrated Ex-LTTE combatants who are working on the project, together with soldiers on duty in the Kayts islands.

The Crab Fattening Project was started by Civil Affairs and Public Relations Office at Security Forces Headquarters - Jaffna (SFHQ-J) with instructions of the Secretary Defence and the Commander of the Army four months ago as an alternative income-generating project for rehabilitated ex-LTTE combatants and their close relatives living along the coastal area of Karampan in the Kayts island.

Commander, SFHQ-J, Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe explained the progress of the project to the visiting Secretary.  Until the process of fattening water crabs and its marketing is properly executed, the17 Battalion Gemunu Watch, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Senaka Premawansa assists the Cooperative Society, established purely for project employees.

The crab fattening project in Kayts made a significant progress with technical assistance and guidance received from Ms. Maheeni Samarakoon Singappuli, an expert in the field and coordination of Lieutenant Colonel Lal Nanayakkara, the Civil Affairs Officer at Headquarters SFHQ-J.

Maiden harvest of the project was collected and sold on the same day.
