Second Phase at Keppapulavu Housing Scheme Commenced


The ceremonial handover of 50 Army built new houses at Keppapulavu Housing Scheme in Mullaittivu for resettled people and the inauguration of the construction of 115 more houses under the second phase of the project commenced on Saturday (16) during a brief ceremony.

Sri Lanka Army troops serving the Security Force Headquarters - Mullaittivu (SFHQ-MLT) on the directions given by the Commander of the Army, completed the construction of 40 new houses within three months and 10 more are to be officially released before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

Troops of the 592 Brigade under the direct supervision of Major General L.B.R. Mark, Security Force Commander - Mullaittivu received financial grants from the Ministry of Resettlement. The face value of a house is about Rs 8 lakhs and the Ministry of Resettlement spent about Rs 375,000/= for each house. The majority of the manpower was provided by infantry battalions serving under the 59 Division.

Those 50 beneficiaries under the first phase are mostly fishermen, making a living by fishing in the nearby Nanthikadal lagoon and most of them were living in houses, made of wattle and daub, prior to displacement before those new houses built by Army troops were offered.        

Inauguration of the second phase to build 115 more new houses and the formal handover of the 50 houses followed a ceremony attended by Hon Gunaratne Weerakoon, Minister of Resettlement, Hon Vinayagamurthi Muralidaran (MP), Deputy Minister of Resettlement, Major General L.B.R. Mark, Security Force Commander -Mullaittivu, General Officers Commanding, 592 Brigade Commander, local community leaders and several others attended the ceremony.
