Sri Lanka’s second joint tri-service Marathon Run, organized under the auspices of Brussels-based International Military Sports Council (Conseil International du Sport Militaire), more widely known as ‘CISM Day Run,’ commenced early this morning (17) at Colombo Light House Galley, with the participation of about 275 tri-service personnel, headed by respective service Commanders.
Last year’s inaugural ‘CISM Day Run,’ was introduced and organized by the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Navy was responsible for the conduct of the event this year.
About 275 personnel from the Army, Navy and Air Force, including 32 military sports women from each service, led by respective tri-service Commanders, took part in the second ‘CISM Day Run’ marathon that covered a distance of about 4 km in Galle Face area.
The event adds a special significance and symbolizes the international recognition of the sport capabilities of the Armed Forces in Sri Lanka.
All the runners on completion of the 4 km run received medals from veterans in the marathon field before certificates were awarded to them by tri service Commanders calling them afterwards to the special stage.
Renowned athletes of the country and the tri services greeted the runners after their successful completion of the marathon.
CISM with its motto, “Friendship through Sport” as one of world’s largest multidisciplinary organizations, dedicated to promote world peace by uniting armed forces through sport, organizes diverse sporting events of this nature for the armed forces of 133 member countries world-wide annually.
Both CISM President and Secretary General in Belgium have sent their greetings to Sri Lanka’s second ‘CISM Day Run’ in Colombo.
In the year 2010, a 70-member group of tri-service sportsmen and women from Sri Lanka took part in the 5th Military World Games, organized by CISM in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, showcasing and sharing the remarkable spirit of friendship and solidarity for sports.
The CISM annually organizes over 20 Military World Championships for different sports, in which all member nations can contribute. To its credit, the CISM holds the most-reputed World Military Games every 4 years, in cooperation with Para Olympic organizations and other international sport organizations. CISM attracts more than one hundred countries as participants in World Military Games, for which the Defence Services personnel from Sri Lanka too had contributed during the last couple of years.
