Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya at the invitation of the Seva Vanitha Army Branch (SVAB) Thursday (3) morning opened the new Army Bakery and the cafeteria relocated at Manning Town, Narahenpita during a simple ceremony.
Mrs Manjulika Jyasuriya, President, SVAB welcomed the Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya on arrival at the venue and conducted him to unveil the plaque to mark the occasion.
Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya after cutting a ribbon amidst chanting of Seth Pirith by members of the Maha Sangha afterwards entered the new Bakery premises and lit the traditional oil lamp in keeping with ancestral traditions.
The new luxurious cafeteria area can accommodate more than 20 -25 personnel at a time and its meals have been subsidized by more than 40% since the service does not spend anything for manpower.
Thereafter, Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya in the company of Mrs Jayasuriya and senior officers inspected the SVAB-managed project premises, including the new stores and the new cafeteria before the Commander symbolically bought a few varieties of snacks, produced in the new Bakery. To coincide with the ceremonial birth of the new cafeteria, a birthday cake was also cut at the same occasion amidst cheering and applause.
Profits and proceeds of the Army Bakery and the cafeteria are used for the promotion of SVAB welfare projects of different nature, meant for disable War Heroes, families of missing or dead War Heroes, children of disable and serving War Hero families and all Army personnel.
Relocation of this welfare project has been carried out by the SVAB on the instructions of the Commander in line with the ongoing relocation process of the Army Headquarters.
Manning Town area in Narahenpita houses residential quarters of a large number of Army personnel serving the Headquarters and other formations, situated in the suburbs of Colombo.
The SVAB-run Viru Kekulu pre-school as well as the SVAB’s school for children with special needs is situated in the same area.
